Also known as the roly-poly, pill bugs are a huge nuisance, and getting rid of them as soon as possible is a must. These tips can help.

What Are Pill Bugs?

Before you can get rid of these little creatures, it may help to know more about them. Pill bugs are usually just 3/8 of an inch in length. They have round body segments and typically come with seven pairs of legs. They have lots of names, including sowbugs and woodlice. If you touch them, they’ll roll into a tight ball to help protect themselves.

These creatures are very related to crustaceans. In most cases, they even have gills. They love damp, dark places - you can typically find them under stones or logs. You’ll see them in your yard late at night, where they’d love nothing more than to eat the stems and roots of your young garden. They are primarily harmless to people, though.

Fighting Pill Bugs

While they are technically harmless, they can be nothing short of a nuisance if they head for your home. In most cases, they can’t actually live inside your house for long periods of time. It’s simply too dry. They can come in through ground-level entrances, though, creating a real hassle. There are a few things you can do to keep them out. First, make certain you’re not inviting them in. If you keep mulch near the base of your home, make certain that it’s no deeper than two inches. Also, be sure you pull it away from the foundation. Usually, you’ll want to establish a dry zone of about 6 inches. You’ll also want to think about your firewood storage, too. Stack it off the ground and keep it as far from the house as possible. Finally, think about your drainage. The wetter it is closer to your home, the more likely you will be to attract pill bugs and other problem creatures.
