Norway Rat Control
Just the word rat makes most people quake with fear. They scurry around at night, spreading disease wherever they go. They’ll gnaw through absolutely anything and, seriously, there is nothing cute about these creatures. Unfortunately, though, they infest thousands of homes every single year, and yours could be next.
What Are Norway Rats?
Norway rats probably originated in Asia but, today, they’re found throughout the world. They can cause property damage in a number of ways, but one of the biggest ways they create damage is by gnawing on absolutely everything. They tend to come in homes when food outside is scarce, and they’ll gnaw through plastic to obtain food or water. Outside, they live in fields, but they can nest anywhere, even in basements. With a hole the size of a quarter, they can get inside a home.
What Do Norway Rats Look Like?
Norway rats are typically brown in color. They usually have some scattered black hairs, though. The underside of these rats is gray or white. They have a long, heavy body and a hairless tail. They can grow up to ten inches in length.
What Are Some Rat Control Methods?
Norway rat control begins with prevention. They tend to be drawn to wood piles, so ensure that any firewood is stored well away from your home. Debris piles are another big draw for these rats, so to keep nesting spots to a minimum on your property, you’ll want to quickly clean up any debris piles. Additionally, it’s important to seal any holes outside of your home with silicone caulk. Moisture sources should be eliminated as well, particularly those that appear in crawl spaces and basements.
Another way to control rat problems in your home is to keep an eye out for any signs of infestation. Rodent droppings are a good place to start, but so are gnawing marks. If you’re seeing greasy rub marks along baseboards, that’s a pretty good sign that you have a rat problem, too.
