Prevent Nesting Squirrels in Your Attic
Squirrels are not that bad, are they? They just hop around in trees and chatter with each other. They are even kind of cute, right? Well, they aren’t that bad…unless you have them nesting squirrels in your roof. Then they can cause quite a bit of damage. Squirrel trapping and squirrel removal are quite important. If they find a way inside, they will quickly make any initial damage worse as they renovate their brand new home.
Squirrels are like any other mammal. Their favorite places to nest are those that are secure and provide good shelter from the weather and temperature. This makes holes in roofs a favorite for squirrels to get into. They will gladly make the hole bigger and the problem worse if it suits them, and then suddenly you have got a spare guest room being remodeled.
It’s hard to tell what the worst part is – the squirrel droppings or the weather damage they invite. Storms will turn any hole in your roof into a big chunk of rot pretty quickly. While the roof damage from squirrels is bad enough, it’s the inside of your home being unprotected from weather that can cause an even worse issue. Saturated wood will rot and need to be replaced.
If you’ve got a shed, garage, barn, or old carriage house, make sure that you do a walk-around to check the roof regularly. Squirrels are opportunists when it comes to setting up a new home. They prefer buildings or areas of a building that aren’t used very often. This makes any building you use mainly for storage an ideal nesting ground for them.
